Pentax *ist DL Digital SLR Review
Matthew Waller has written a review of the Pentax *ist DL Digital SLR at DigiCamReview - the 6 megapixel digital SLR is one of the cheapest available, available for around £400 with kit lens. The Pentax is one of the smallest digital SLRs available, and has some of the smallest lenses available, including a pancake 40mm (~61mm equivalent) lens. With Digital SLRs available for around £400 - can you see yourself buying one in the near future? Or does the price, and size put you off?

You don't need a tripod for using one of these. There's not really much difference from this to getting your phone out, except this comes with a decent flash, whereas your phone image will probably just come out looking a bit blurry. Admittedly, you will be getting mugged if you walk around stoops estate with one of these.
I'm very tempted by a DSLR, considering some 12x optical zoom digicams (Canon S3 IS, Sony Hsomething) cost around £300 - £370 - for an extra £30 you can get a digital SLR that has better image quality, is quicker at focusing in low light, has lower noise and higher ISO options, and better depth of field (shallower, meaning your subject is in focus, rather than everything behind distracting from the picture) etc. Also, all you need is a rucksack and then it's not a pain to carry around.
admittedly it's not as quick to get out as an ultra compact in your pocket, but why not have a cheap ultra compact as well?
funny you should mention that, there's a stoops estate in rainhill (liverpool) and burnley! J
