head on

If 2 cars were travelling at 70mph in the opposite direction to one another collided.. is it likely that the people in the cars survive? click here for an instance of. It'd be cool if they all make it.

To be honest, that doesn't make sense. The Megane has either a 4 or 5 star safety rating on euroncap.com depending on model, whereas the Opel/Vauxhall Vectra has a 2, 3 or a 4 star rating based on age of model - yet the people in the vauxhall are better off! It appears as though euroncap results are useless for high speed crashes and they're wrong and deliberately misleading!

aha, euroncaps website says you can't compare results from different sizes of cars, and that larger cars are generally safer. so even though a small car might have a 5 star rating, it doesn't mean it's as good as or better than a large car with a lower rating. (in fact it could be worse, but euroncap don't state how much worse it could be).

some more info:
Both cars were reduced to wrecks in the collision, which took place at about 8.30pm.
The northbound carriageway was closed for six hours after the accident while police investigators collected evidence, and re-opened at 3.40am ..
Inspector Yates of Greater Manchester Police said: “He was seen travelling the wrong way down the fast lane.”
“He was travelling at some speed close to the speed limit before the collision.”
He said he would expect the motorway to be fairly busy at that time of day.
..A nine-year-old boy is tonight seriously ill in hospital and his 43-year-old father broke both legs and both arms in the crash, but his daughter, aged 11 suffered only minor injuries..

Assuming all three were wearing seatbelts.. why would the 11 year old be better able to survive - there must be an optimum weight where the seatbelts do a better job of protecting.. I expect knecks are not so resilient at age 9.

my guess is that the boy and the dad were in the front of the car, and the engine area / front of the car would have moved into the area where the 2 were seated in the front. i would guess that the girl would have been in the back and her area stayed the same shape.
