Their 'reasons' seemed to be 'ooh we can do a better laptop'*

So the real resons he hints at are that apple won't have to do their own hardware designs for strange devices, and that apple could do a seamless windows (as in windows compatible) platform.

arstechnica:stokes : In this artcle John Stokes gets some insider info too.. and suggests that ibm don't make enough spare chips for apple (because no one else really buys 2.5ghz ppc chips) and then apple complain when they didn't order enough. And intel will offer good bulk discounts, [for pc processors], while also being able to supply the processor for the next generation of ipod devices.
so waddaya reckon? - will the best power pc to run darwin (and hence mac os X) in future be a microsoft xbox 360 (over 3ghz, 64 bit) or some pentium 4 with rosetta emulation. or something better from ibm. Is speed what apple are looking for? or just under-cooked laptop users?

I posted this link (http://www.theregister.co.uk/2005/06/08/apple_osborne_effect/) in a comment - it's about how IBM don't care about Apple coz' the cpu's they make, about 3% or something goes to Apple, whereas all the rest go to microsoft/playstation/nintendo (who sell way more machines than apple). i watched the WWDC (What would steve Do Convention?) and it was very interesting. I reckon IBM could make dual core PPC G5's in the future, but apparently one of the main reasons Apple are switching is because of the massive heat difference between intel chips and PPC G5 chips...
AMD would be worth considering though because they have a 'Turion' Chip which is a laptop version of the AMD-64 - so 64bit cpus can be in laptops, and can be quiet, cool, and low power hungry. I guess we'll see what happens when the new computers come out - personally I think they will use the Pentium Ms (which are quicker than P4s) to replace the G4 stuff in laptops/cheaper/smaller macs, and keep the G5s until Intel do Dual Core 64bit stuff...
I think they definitely needed something powerful in a laptop - G5 was too hot, G4 is too slow, so Pentium M fits perfectly - faster than a P4, (P4s are faster than G4s), and perfect for laptops.

1. announcing a new computer that no one can buy, a full year before it is released will damage sales.
2. who was buying all the ppc chips if apple weren't?? there's the ps2 and maybe the gamecube?
3. ibm make the more powerful processors therefore the new macs will be less / barely any better than current macs.
4. by which time ibm will have 3ghz and above chips going into the xbox 360.
5. its possible that the mac will be seen as a trendy pc with less virus, more dependability.
6. its possible that software may be developed that might make [windows]games run well on the mac.
7. how about making the xbox 360 also run mac os X instead: faster processor, better games, cheaper.

have you watched the WWDC video? that does a good job of explaining apple's public reasons why they are switching. it's mainly to do with heat - and i do think that intel's roadmap is going to be better, (dual core / quad core (if they follow amd's lead)), plus intel can actually supply the chips, whereas it sounds like IBM couldn't be bothered.

cool. macs have loads of (really big) registers. i wonder what cool instructions you can do with those registers eg;
