Windows Vista (previously Longhorn, basically the next Windows) is checked out at elite, here's what we get to look forward to: (basically Windows XP with new themes and silly extra features, and more slowness, yay, and you can change it all back to classic view so it looks like Windows 2000)

"After using Windows Vista Beta 1 for a while, I've come to the conclusion that it's a pretty good foundation to build something on. It's pretty stable for an initial Beta, but it feels sluggish. And somehow when you use it long enough, it feels even more sluggish, but the memory consumption doesn't change. The programs might also freeze up for a minute or two, and suddenly start working again. What I didn't show you in the pictures or tell you before is that when a program freezes and you try to close it down, a small window appears which says that Windows is trying to find out the reason why the program froze up. If the problem is found and is fixable, the program might become responsive again. But from my experience so far, it's hardly ever fixed."

yeah, i normally have preferred Windows 2000 - but have recently been switching over to XP - the image slideshow / preview stuff in XP's really quite nice and can make photo management quicker / easier than in 2k. But some of the auto pop up "ooh you've put a cd in, what do you want to do" stuff is dead annoying.
