Prince releasing latest album free with Daily Mail

Prince is planning on giving his newest album away for free with Daily Mail, record companies and shops are freaking out saying crazy things like

"The Artist Formerly Known as Prince should know that with behaviour like this he will soon be the Artist Formerly Available in Record Stores. And I say that to all the other artists who may be tempted to dally with the Mail on Sunday!" (via boingboing)

Pop Goes My Heart

Watched the film "Music & Lyrics" on Friday. It's quite good so long as you like Hugh Grant. Anyway, there's a slight 80s theme in the film, and as part of the deal you get this wonderfully cheesy song infecting your brain. Thought I'd share it with you boys...

Take Action: Tell Steve Jobs to Unlock the iPhone!

This one's a bit strange, normally Act For Change campaign for things like, oh I don't know, the constitution, and closing Bush Administration's prison camp at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, but you know, this is obviously just as important, the iphone is locked to AT&T!
Behold, the first man to by an iPhone:

Bernard Manning's Dead

Obviously you probably knew that. My feeling has always been that I probably quite liked him, but I can't say I've actually seen that much of his stuff - strangely doesn't seem to turn up on TV so often. So I thought I might investigate to see whether his comedy actually was racist or just didn't fall into line with the way the politically correct brigade want us all to think/speak. Was he funny? For the entire span of his life? Never? Was his comedy overshadowed in later years? If you would like to accompany me on this arguably pointless journey, here's a YouTube link to some a selection of his stuff:

You tube search for "Bernard Manning"

And my first conclusion so far: He certainly didn't necessarily know comedy genius when he saw it. Here he his laying into The Mighty Boosh in a way that only a man who didn't get it would:

Download and keep video from YouTube and similar sites

Keepvid.com allows you to download an .flv (flash video) file of YouTube and that.  There are .flv players and convertors (to more useful formats) out there too, which can be handy.

Here's something interesting to try it on, if you move swiftly (it's only up on YouTube for a week, apparently):

Apple have released the Safari browser for the PC. They reckon it's the quickest web browser available and have graphs to prove it and everything. Although we all (should) know that you can use graphs to prove anything... They've updated it due to the security flaws.

Scorched 3D

Think it might've been mentioned before, not sure, but just stumbled across it again. It's Scorched Earth (Scorched Tanks on the Amiga) in 3D. It might be good - the 2d Amiga one certainly gave many happy hours, anyway. It's also very free.

england play football

Albania, a country somewhere in Europe. England, another country, to the left of Europe. They've sent their best footballing men and women, to Burnley, to have a bit of a kick-about. And people from all over England might just try and visit to watch. (the match occurs at 8pm local time this friday, and will involve England's 'B' team - Whatever happened to the A-Team?).
Also, one of the Albanian players got a bit excited in Clayton-Le-Moors and found the local staff to be a little too attractive - more details from here.

The final word in Mac vs. PC? (South Park stylee)

Kodak apparently not bothering with "cheap" digital cameras anymore...

but they are going to make CMOS sensors for mobile phones. kind of a shame really as "Kodak Moments" were part of life, and we've all had Kodak camera's at some point in our life. maybe the future of digital photographs is on you mobile phone?

anyway, it's worth watching this Kodak video, sounded like they were pretty fired up for digital cameras, but then made cheap ones with no profit.

PS - They've got a sale on now - lots of cheap cameras that might be great for your mum, or as someone's first digital camera. Although there's a number of digital camera sales happening over this bank holiday weekend so keep your eye out for bargains :)

And also there are now 1000gb hard drives (hitachi) and 300gb laptop hard drives (fujitsu). I think that's really fantastic.

Resource to help kids learn to code

Back in the early 80's, if you were lucky enough to have a home computer, you switched on and if you could be bothered looking at the books that came in the box, you had everything you needed to take your first steps in computer programming/becoming a social outcast. Now you fire up Windows, and by default there's almost no coding tools installed, so if there's no-one around to show you how, the chances are you won't. Maybe you'll learn HTML, but HTML isn't really much like coding for the most part unless you dabble with Javascript.

So this BBC article points to a few interesting resources. First there's Scratch, which sounds like it's pretty much 100% visual. Then there's HacketyHack which is apparently all about learning Ruby, which I gather is probably quite an interesting language.

Lemmings for Windows Shareware and Digital Cameras

and a cheap ultra compact digital camera £105 (or £10 off with google checkout) - and you get an ultra compact 7 megapixel digital camera with a 3x optical zoom lens, 2.5" screen, and MPEG4 DIVX video recording...

or perhaps you'd like to spend £23 on an "Alba / Bush" 2 megapixel digital camera... (it's based on the Minolta E2300 from like 7 years ago...), there's quite a lot on there under £40. But ASDA had the some of the best deals, the Canon Powershot something (4mp, 4x optical) for £40. Although if you do want a great camera for around £100, then you can't go wrong with the Fuji F20, or any Canon.

"Real" TV on the Internet

Channel 4 Live - "Simulcast", lets you watch C4 made programs, like Peep show, live at the same time they are on C4, small video size, full length programs.
Channel 4 On Demand - download C4 special program to your PC for small videos of stuff that was on TV, lots of free content, full length programs, as well as programs that cost 99p, shame the video size is so small.
Joost (beta) - Download their program to your PC / Mac, watch DVD sized videos in a window or full screen from specially selected programs, like clips from Fifth Gear, etc. Impressive, but limited programs at the moment.

Spare CPUs

R.E.M. - Their finest hour

Everyone likes R.E.M. .  Yes, they've done some distinctly average songs at times.  Yes, they sometimes come over as a bit boring, but with moments like this one, they ought to be very proud of what they've achieved.  Lovely stuff.

BookButler.com

I don't know if you guys are the same, but I get through techie books like Tom gets through dead animals.  Well, today, I found a frankly amazing search engine.  It's like Kelkoo or Froogle, but specifically for books.  Armed with a title or ISBN I've been able to find some out of print techie books at shockingly good prices, and it even gave me the postage costs to the UK in it's summary.  Can't say if it'd be good for other kinds of books, but nobody reads fiction anyway, surely?

Messenger Plus Live!

I haven't tried it yet, but I've been recommended this (non Microsoft) extension to MSN Messenger.  Looks like you can program it to expand short text snippets, so maybe it will help eliminate such tragedies as "lol" and "lmao".  I can hope.  Apparently it can do tabbed windows as well, for when you've got multiple conversations going on (surely nobody does that!).

Playstation 3 Most Powerful Supercomputer in the World

(potentially) So far 13000 ish Playstation 3s have started doing folding at home producing 338 TFLOPS - more than double the TFLOPS produced by 160,000 ish PCs. If 18,000 more PS3s take part then the folding at home project will outperform the World's most powerful supercomputer and will produce 1 PFLOP. (Latest stats here - they've almost reached 1 Petaflop, and are currently producing 900 TFLOPS!)

"According to Internet News, Symantec found that Windows had the fewest number of patches and the shortest average patch development time of the five operating systems it monitored in the last six months of 2006.

During this time more than 39 vulnerabilities were found in the operating system and Vole took an average of 21 days to fix them. While this is still more than last year it still knocked the spots off the competition." from the inquirer

Fun with Athiesm

A friend sent me this, here big chunk of text, with a few interesting thoughts on Atheism in.  It might have a few interesting points, and also hog the page somewhat!:

An atheist professor of philosophy speaks to his class on the
problem science has with God, The Almighty.

He asks one of his new students to stand and .....

Prof: So you believe in God?
Student: Absolutely, sir.

Prof: Is God good?
Student: Sure.

Prof: Is God all-powerful?
Student: Yes.

Prof: My brother died of cancer even though he prayed to God to heal
him. Most of us would attempt to help others who are ill. But God
didn't.
How is this God good then? Hmm?

(Student is silent.)

Prof: You can't answer, can you? Let's start again! , young fellow. Is
God good?
Student: Yes.

Prof: Is Satan good?
Student: No.

Prof: Where does Satan come from?
Student: From...God...

Prof: That's right. Tell me son, is there evil in this world?
Student: Yes.

Prof: Evil is everywhere, isn't it? And God did make everything.
Correct?
Student: Yes.

Prof: So who created evil?

Student does not answer.

Prof: Is there sickness? Immorality? Hatred? Ugliness? All these
terrible things exist in the world, don't they?
Student: Yes, sir.

Prof: So, who created them?

Student has no answer.

Prof: Science says you have 5 senses you use to identify and observe
the world around you. Tell me, son...Have you ever seen God?
Student: No, sir.

Prof: Tell us if you have ever heard your God?
Student: No, sir.

Prof: Have you ever felt your God, tasted your God, smelt your God?
Have you ever had any sensory perception of God for that matter?
Student: No, sir. I'm afraid I haven't.

Prof: Yet you still believe in Him?
Student: Yes.

Prof: According to empirical, testable, demonstrable protocol,
science says your GOD doesn't exist. What do you say to that, son?
Student: Nothing. I only have my faith.

Prof: Yes. Faith. And that is the problem science has.

Student: Professor, is there such a thing as heat?
Prof: Yes.

Student: And is there such a thing as cold?
Prof: Yes.

Student: No sir. There isn't.

(The lecture theatre becomes very quiet with this turn of events.)

Student: Sir, you can have lots of heat, even more heat, superheat,
mega heat, white heat, a little heat or no heat. But we don't have
anything called cold. We can hit 458 degrees below zero which is no
heat, but we can't go any further after that. There is no such thing
as cold. Cold is only a word we use to describe the absence of heat.
We cannot measure cold.

Heat is energy. Cold is not the opposite of heat, sir, just the
absence of it.

(There is pin-drop silence in the lecture theatre.)

Student: What about darkness, Professor? Is there such a thing as
darkness?

Prof: Yes. What is night if there isn't darkness?

Student: You're wrong again, sir. Darkness is the absence of
something. You can have low light, normal light, bright light,
flashing light....But if you have no light constantly, you have
nothing and it's called darkness, isn't it? In reality, darkness
isn't. If it were you would be able to make darkness darker,
wouldn't you?

Prof: So what is the point you are making, young man?

Student: Sir, my point is your philosophical premise is flawed.
Prof: Flawed? Can you explain how?

Student: Sir, you are working on the premise of duality. You argue
there is life and then there is death, a good God and a bad God. You
are viewing the concept of God as something finite, something we can
measure. Sir, science can't even explain a thought. It uses
electricity and magnetism, but has never seen, much less fully
understood either one.

To view death as the opposite of life is to be ignorant of the fact
that death cannot exist as a substantive thing. Death is not the
opposite of life: just the absence of it.

Now tell me, Professor. Do you teach your students that they evolved
from a monkey?

Prof: If you are referring to the natural evolutionary process, yes,
of course, I do.

Student: Have you ever observed evolution with your own eyes, sir?

(The Professor shakes his head with a smile, beginning to realize
where the argument is going.)

Student: Since no one has ever observed the process of evolution at
work and cannot even prove that this process is an on-going
endeavor, are you not teaching your opinion, sir? Are you not a
scientist but a preacher?

(The class is in uproar.)

Student: Is there anyone in the class who has ever seen the
Professor's brain?

(The class breaks out into laughter.)

Student: Is there anyone here who has ever heard the Professor's
brain, felt it, touched or smelt it? No one appears to have done so.
So, according to the established rules of empirical, stable,
demonstrable protocol, science says that you have no brain, sir.

With all due respect, sir, how do we then trust your lectures, sir?

(The room is silent. The professor stares at the student, his face
unfathomable.)

Prof: I guess you'll have to take them on faith, son.

Student: That is it sir... The link between man & god is FAITH. That
is all that keeps things moving & alive.

The God Who Wasn't There

Haven't heard anything about this film in the UK yet, but maybe it'll find it's way over here eventually.  It sounds like it's probably in a documentary format, and, much like the Da Vinci Code, will presumably bring a broad grin to the face of anyone wishing back up their belief that Christianity is historical hog-wash without thinking very hard and remain entirely unimpressive to the rest of us. Looks like viewers will be treated to the mindless spoutings of athiest fundamentalist Richard Dawkins (who presumably is a huge embarassment to athiests the world over!), although most of us in the UK have probably already seen him do his thing on various TV documentaries.

According to imdb.com the film kicks off with the narrative lines
"The Earth revolves around the Sun. But it wasn't always that way. The Sun used to revolve around the Earth. It was like that for hundreds of years, until it was discovered to be otherwise, and even for a few hundred years after that. But, ultimately, after much kicking and screaming, the Earth did, in fact, begin to revolve around the Sun. Christianity was wrong about the solar system. What if it's wrong about something else, too? This movie's about what happened when I went looking for Jesus."

Perhaps they're saying that culturally Christianity had it wrong at some point in history, which may possibly be true, but as far as I'm aware the bible doesn't paint a picture of a sun revolving around the earth.  Impossible to say without actually watching it, but it -does- sound like it's going to be another film aimed squarely at people with little interest in truth!

All about hard drives

Google use thousands and thousands of hard drives. They have shared their findings with some interesting conclusions about the reliability of hard drives:

"First of all, Mean Time Between Failure rates mean nothing.
•Secondly, SMART hardware monitoring missed 36% of all uh-ohs.
•Third, overworked drives fail similarly to standard drives after the first year.
•Fourth, Hard drive age means less than you think.
•Fifth, failure does not go up when temperatures are higher than usual (unless super high.)"

Unfortunately they don't tell us who manufactures the most reliable drives... found at Gizmodo

Widgets in Opera

Opera is a fun, free web-browser (and apparently pretty short on security vulnerabilities), but what I hadn't realised until ten minutes ago, was that it has this "Widgets" menu. If you use it and select "add widgets", you get the option to download a whole load of smart little mini-applications. Here's a few that sounded immediately interesting...

Video downloader - allows you to download videos from YouTube and maybe other places too. It works too, so now you can grab that advert with Gary in! You have to use a .flv player application, though.

Get a Mac Adverts Updated

Apple's "Get a Mac" adverts have been updated to show a PC running the new Vista - the new one's called "Security" - and "Surgery" is about the PC being upgraded to Vista.

"In a sketch clearly aimed at exposing just one of the weak spots in Windows Vista, Apple's ad is critical of Microsoft's intrusive User Account Control (UAC) element, and of Windows security across the board. The ad features a third character who represents the UAC. The third character interrupts the flow of communication between Mac and PC with a constant string of permission requests."

All the UK Adverts are here, there are more than I thought.

the flapcam at image-acquire - a prototype / concept - it folds up so that the lens and screen are protected. seriously I had this idea about a month ago and even sketched some designs (as shown here) my version allows you to use it folded so it's small, or (as shown in the middle) in a self-portrait mode where the lens and screen are pointing at you. My version was called the "Slim Shot" :)

obvisously it's already been done by Olympus with the IR-500, but shhh, lets pretend that never happened! :)

Blackberries are cool BUT...

Blackberry Pearl's look very cool, and the whole concept of "always on" email, that you can access anytime, anywhere is very useful for some people, but blackberry's are such a pain in the ass to setup and configure in an enterprise (exchange) environment! ARGH!! Hopefully sometime today I'll actually get this blackberry setup and configured and working... it's only taken me 4 hours!!!!! (and it's still not finished.. will it ever get past 92% activation?). More on the sexy looking Blackberry Pearl here.

Apple release the iPhone (PDA) thingy.

"So what we have ended up with is a widescreen, touch screen product that somewhat resembles a slick PDA. At just 11.6mm thick it is the thinnest smartphone in the world and comes with Mac OS X installed as its core operating system! A two megapixel camera makes it onboard along with the anticipated audio and video playback (supported codecs not revealed) and the large 3.5in, 320 x 480 resolution display automatically detects whether the phone is being held in a landscape for portrait position."

Widescreen 3.5" iPod (Video and MP3), Phone, Internet, 2mp Camera, 4gb or 8gb versions available.

In car DVD player 7" screen £299

Halfords Ripspeed in car DVD playerIt will play DVDs, or DVDs full of MP3s (4.7gbs worth), and it fits in a normal sized car stereo hole, and has a 7" screen that comes out of the unit, and when it's closed, the top of the screen has an LCD display so it looks like a normal car stereo! from Halfords half price - I seriously can't believe it's only £299 - it seems like it's so much of a bargain you'd be mad not to buy one - but for the fact that you can buy cars for less than £300.

Metro have a news item on "giving africa an animal" - World Land Trust say it's "grossly irresponsible", Animal Aid say it does "not diminish poverty" due to the fact that "all farmed animals require proper nourishment, large quantities of water, shelter from weather, and vetenary care" which is something places like Africa lack (they lack them for people, let alone animals).

Get the new AVG Free

If you're running AVG 7.something and not 7.5 - then you might get messages saying "this program is going to run out, please buy me!"* - when in actual fact, all you need to do is download the newer free version 7.5 from here and do a manual install (repair installation).

Cheap cars on ebay.

Hey, if you're interested in buying a car, especially a cheap one, then ebay seems to be the place, with a 2002 model Proton Impian selling for £1550 (cost new £13000, valued at £2500+ by parkers), whereas a similar age Ford Focus is valued at £3500 - £4200 (cost new £12495). Knowing that some cars depreciate more than others, I've setup this ebay search that shows you all these cheap cars for sale. I guess they're like the modern day Lada, but better.

Cheap Cars on Ebay.

Alternatively you can search for "Buy it Now" cars under a set price, for example, under £250. This search gets you some good results, such as a Mk2 Golf for £100.

blogger beta gone live

blogger have started to let you convert your normall blogger blogs into the new "blogger beta" style of blog -

this has many advantages namely: tags* (used on technorati and other sites, and used for searching on certain topics), much quicker publishing, neater archive display, integrate other site's RSS feed onto your blog easily, private blogs etc etc.

however, there are some dis-advantages: you need a google account to logon. plus it's a bit of an unknown as to how well it will migrate over the current design, although I suspect it shouldn't cause any problems.

I've been using blogger beta for this: The Ricoh Caplio R5 Blog and it's been great!

So to summarise: I think blogger beta is quite good, but we need to make sure everyone is happy to move over to blogger beta with this site and has a working google account before we can move over. alternatively we could simply not move over, as what we have now is currently working.

*example tags for this post would be: blogger, beta, tags, etc

Update: Turns out we can't upgrade this blog yet as this kind of blog can't be converted yet: "A very large blog. (More than a couple thousand posts + comments.)"

Zune Bad, Babies Good

apparently the zune is really crappy. suntimes.com:

"Yes, Microsoft's new Zune digital music player is just plain dreadful. I've spent a week setting this thing up and using it, and the overall experience is about as pleasant as having an airbag deploy in your face.

"Avoid," is my general message. The Zune is a square wheel, a product that's so absurd and so obviously immune to success that it evokes something akin to a sense of pity."

In other exciting news, we had a baby. details here (with links to lots of pics).

Buy Nothing Day

Interesting idea for Christmas - stop buying stuff! It junks up the world causing major environmental issues, and we have 10 times as much stuff as other countries. We (the western world) consume 86% of the world's products! Found at http://blog.iamnotashamed.net/. Another interesting Christmas thought here: Chistmas is not your birthday.

boinc machines

At BOINCstats, they have lists and lists of information about which types of computers have contributed how many units in recent days. And part of my interest was actually seeing where my processor is relative to other processors, just to see what I can expect. One of the things that's interesting for me though is that the mac pro machines (which all get the same identity on the lists, whether they have 2ghz or 3ghz processor) are very near the top - as can be see in this list. (check that the list is sorted by average credit per cpu, and then look at the fourth item down) or have a look at this list where you can see a fair few machines which regularly average above 2000 credits per day! That's 10 times faster than my Intel P4 @ 2.8ghz.

A Big list of Essential PC Software

Matt said I should do a big list of all the software needed for a Windows PC in order to protect it from the internet, viruses, spyware, adware, malicious software, etc. Whilst it may seem slightly excessive, in my personal experience, it's pretty much essential!

here it is.

If anyone has any suggestions please let me know! (I thought I'd already done something similar, but not to the same extent)

PC World can't fix your PC

"Computing Which? magazine visited seven PC World outlets and 13 independent stores. The experts deliberately created faults. On half the computers they deleted a file that helps to start up the Windows operating system. On the other half they loosened a cable connecting the hard disk to the rest of the computer.

The research identified 'staggering' differences in the level of know-how and charges. Correcting the simple Windows software problem triggered price quotes from £20 to £260, while the bill for fixing a loose cable ranged from £10 to £139.

One London branch of PC World misdiagnosed the software problem as a corrupted hard disk and quoted £350 for repairs. A member of staff even advised buying a new PC which could have cost more than £500. Another PC World branch in Oxford misdiagnosed a computer with a loose cable as having a corrupted hard disk and quoted £300 for a repair. "

Solid State Digital Speedometer

Coolest speedo ever? Austin Meastro Vardan Plas. Even has a "Convert" button. Am I the only one that has always wanted a digital speedo? If you own a ford fiesta there is a "trick mode" where you can get the car to display the speed digitally instead of showing you the mileage and the time. Instructions here.

Other cars with digital speedos:
Check out this Fiat Tipo bad boy here. (another pic here)
