tracker for laptops

Hey..
The gist of the story is that Students will be able to have 'tracker' software installed on their laptops so that in the event of the laptop being stolen the police will be able to trace its movements remotely.
Just wondering...
a - what software is available for tracking your stuff once its' got nicked..
b - or does it require some hardware?
c - is there anything for free
d - does it actually work
Any ideas welcome..

gps tracking for your car is $199 - http://www.brickhousesecurity.com/gps-car-tracking-vehicle-logging.html - I guess it depends how much it costs for laptops? hopefully less, because why install GPS tracking on a laptop when some laptops only cost £300...

b: I'm thinking that if you assume that the the thief or whoever they pass the laptop onto isn't going to format and reinstall, you could make software that sits quietly in the background and checks online to see if the computer has reported stolen. If it has, it could begin key-logging and upload the results to a server (possibly identifying the current user's address or something). Not the strongest of protection, but it might be a start. Not that I know of any such software. And virus software might possibly alert the user because of the key-logging hooks.
