Any Video Converter

One way or another I end up tinkering with a lot of video conversion/video editing software. A lot of it's badly written crap. Lots of very crashy video software out there.

Have discovered a gem here, so I thought I'd spread the word. The free edition is free (which is a great idea), and offers lots of conversion options, including quicktime to xvid and stuff. It's also good with .mkv and .flv files and does a bit of MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 stuff as well.

thanks that free one actually seems REALLY good - converting to mpg can actually convert it to MPEG4 :) not sure what the best compression options are but seems to do a really good job!

Yeah, I was shocked too! I like the "to xvid" option 'cos it allows you to create a video at the original frame size, rather than messing up the aspect ratio. There are some aspect ratio options tucked away somewhere, but I wasn't quite sure what was going on with them.

it looks like you need to pay for it for full options? or should i be using the customised avi option?

The one I've been using has been Customised AVI Movie, with the video codec set to "xvid" and the video size set to "original". I found I did have to push the bitrate up a bit to get good results for fast moving and detailed material, and also for high definition material (which I suppose is reasonable - more pixels to encode, higher data rate).

I haven't really investigated the paid for version in any depth to be honest. Got a feeling I won't be needing it!

How does one go about converting videos, pray? Do you preach at them for an hour and hope they become DVDs? Present them with a book of Ultimate IT Questions and hope they return with more RAM for the sacrifice?

Am I not taking this seriously enough?

Ah, The Mermster! Taking techie piffle to the extreme as well. Lovely to have you lurking in these parts, m'dear.

Not nearly seriously enough, though, no. You should be ashamed of yourself. I know I am.
