Intel Core2Duo Quad core 2.4ghz CPUs are now £146 (ex vat) !!! (from scan.co.uk) So if you want a system based on this, then you're looking at around £330 - £380 upgrade costs to get CPU (£146), Mobo (£40 intel), 2gbs DDR2 ram (Crucial £32 ea), Case (£35 Aopen + 500+ Watt powersupply £30), Gefore 8600 PCI-express gfx (£65), excluding vat. You can use your HD etc from your current system, but if you're like me, then you've got an AGP card, and DDR 1 memory that you can't use.

Ooo, £300 is quite a lot of money though isn't it? And none of us actually believe that quad core is likely to provide a significant speed increase anyway, right?
it does if you want to run distributed computing (like Boinc, seti, folding at home etc), and you can get a Radeon X1950GT gfx card for £81 inc vat that lets you run folding at home at super speeds.
Ah, that could work. I read something about graphics cards exposing their parallel processing super-powers to the non graphics world recently - it sounds dead smart.
My work machine is an Athlon 64 bit dual core at 2 Ghz. Bet it spends most of it's time idle. Reassuringly it still can't always keep up with my distinctly average speed typing!
