A Big list of Essential PC Software

Matt said I should do a big list of all the software needed for a Windows PC in order to protect it from the internet, viruses, spyware, adware, malicious software, etc. Whilst it may seem slightly excessive, in my personal experience, it's pretty much essential!

here it is.

If anyone has any suggestions please let me know! (I thought I'd already done something similar, but not to the same extent)

RIghtMark do this software that lets you automatically reduce the speed of your processor, depending on how much work your computer is actually doing - so reducing energy use and helping save the planet. See here to get it. 'RMClock' is the software. Helps if you've got a more recent processor. Totally free ;-)

The point being that if boinc ever stops running, I'll end up running a 2.8ghz p4 at 350mhz, yaay.

that's not really related to anti virus software is it ? :)

but sounds kind of interesting. Does it start at bios / dos level or do you have to wait till windows loads up?

if you could set the cpu at half speed then you could run a number of processors without a fan making a silent pc
