Petrol prices have been going up, so someone somewhere via chain email has had this idea, boycott Esso and BP (the big boys), and they'll reduce their prices. (thus making everybody else reduce their prices). Yeah sure, asif used to go to my school. Anyway, it's the government that put all the TAX on petrol, so therefore it's the governments fault, not the petrol companies.
>It's easy to make this happen. Just forward this email, and buy your petrol at Shell, Tesco, Sainsburys, Morrisons (75p)Jet etc. i.e. boycott BP and Esso.

The Tech Report - There is no dash in "The Tech Report", dag nabbit!: "Just when you thought it was safe to run a Mac, along comes a serious security flaw in OS X. The vulnerability, first reported to Apple in February, but not made public until this week, already has several working exploits and is considered by some to be 'extremely critical'. With a carefully crafted website, a motivated individual can install and execute malicious programs and scripts, by taking advantage of web browsers using the operating system's calls for handling URLs (paths such as 'http:', 'ftp:', etc.). The article provides a workaround for the problem, but Apple has not yet released a fix." - Those are the same words they use when talking about windows...

Dixons Olympus D390 (the american name for the C-150) - entering the code '20offolympus' should get you 20 off the olympus. I tried this camera out and wasn't very impressed by it however, so I wouldn't personally recommend it, plus it's due on the 20th May - but I still haven't received the Casio from dixons yet!

assuming house prices continue to rise, so that no one in their 20s can afford new houses.. surely that means only dead peoples houses will be affordable.. what are the mathematical logical consequences?
a) people who have houses will buy second homes (and rent them)
b) eventually 1/2 the population will be retired and the other half will be renting properties off them.
c) ???
d) profit.

computers. i hate them. scenario: upgrade windows98 pc to windows2000. insert w2k cd, wait 1hour. try running office 2000 / outlook after upgrade. it says 'sorry we need to reconfigure office because you've upgraded from windows 95/98 - please insert your office 2000 premium cd' so you insert the cd, it says 'sorry that's not an office 2000 premium cd' when in fact IT IS!! okay, so you try to uninstall office 2000 - it won't let you! - so you use the microsoft clean up utility to uninstall office 2000 - then reinstall office 2000 - then try again, it says the same, 'sorry we need to reconfigure office because you've upgraded from windows 95/98 - please insert your office 2000 premium cd' - okay so you log on as the admin again, uninstall office 2k with the clean up utility, delete the whole office 2000 folder, then reinstall office 2000... finally an hour later, you run outlook and it works, it still says 'you've upgraded... please insert the cd...' but this time it accepts it... then you think, fantastic! so you log off and then log on again as the user... only to be told 'sorry we need to reconfigure office because you've upgraded from windows 95/98 - please insert your office 2000 premium cd' then when you insert the cd that you've just used to reinstall office for the 2nd time it says "SORRY - THAT'S NOT THE RIGHT CD!!!"!!!! AAAARRRGGHHH!!!

Breaking news! Giant Crisp eaten by Josh in the afternoon. The Thai Sweet Chicken flavour crisp was found in a standard packet of McCoy's Spice potato chips. "Bloody hell!" is what one passer by had to say about the giant sized crisp, others said "Have you seen the size of that crisp!?" in shock. Update D. Tunstall from KP Snacks had the following to say: "It would not be unusual for a larger than normal crisp to be in the packet if a large potato had been used so this can occasionally happen."

Eternal Sunshine of the spotless mind. It's basically a sentimental romantic "comedy" potentially a "dark" comedy but that's not it's main focus. It's a bit like memento, but not as dark, a bit like donnie darko but not as sci-fi or dark. It does get you thinking, but not too much, ie. you don't need to watch it again to figure it out, and it doesn't really make you want to watch it again to figure it out (like the orginal matrix, or memento). One of the main reasons why she did what she did is pretty weak explanation / reason, but that's not the important bit - although I was expecting a much darker reason. It kind of makes you appreciate what you've got, and the good times you have with people rather than all the petty things. There aren't really any deep and meaningful things or views that make you go "wow" apart from the general moral: "don't mess with science to erase people's memories / history as it messes people's lives up". It's good though, Jim Carrey acts very well, as does Kate Winslett. Frodo's in it as well, which is kinda funny.

Sasser computer worm wriggles worldwide more than a million people have been infected with this. It's another tcp/ip scanning virus/worm much like Blaster / Welchia so it doesn't need email to spread. Here's a list of affected software plus the windows updates, and there's a removal tool here - the FBI are looking for the writer, whilst the BBC try and out-do each other with the use of old irrelevant photos. there's also a network scanner here that will tell you if machines are vulnerable to it. if that all sounds too heavy, why not look at The Sony EyeToy Webcam
To summarise: If you are having problems with your computer, and you think you may have the "sasser" worm, then:
1. Scan with the symantec removal tool, even if it doesn't find it (ie your computer doesn't have the worm) still follow the next steps:
2. Install the windows patch, plus to make sure you're protected from other worms etc, get all the updates from windowsupdate.microsoft.com and then restart
3. If you're still having problems, try the Mcafee Stinger, as this will check for all the other new viruses and worms going around. (such as Blaster, Welchia, Sasser etc)
Other things you need to do regardless of whether you've got a virus or not is: make sure your anti-virus software is up to date, if you don't have any get AVG for free (www.grisoft.com) and set it to auto-update. Keep checking windowsupdate.microsoft.com for updates, or set Windows to auto-update in the Control Panel (if you have the right version of windows), plus you should think about setting up a personal firewall, such as ZoneAlarm (free), or something similar, especially if you've got broadband etc.

Apple: the past 10 years and the quest for more developers.
- basically a big post about what could/should be done to make apple development more attractive to the rest of the world
- and the bit I thought was interesting, the mention that apple don't make low end computers and they don't have a 'simple' development environment for low cost software (ie; no visual Basic) although they could work harder on making python and other languages a fun to develop visual thingy.
- consequently, as the user base won't expand among the people who are 'the masses', and non-apple software is big and expensive and old.. the only new stuff will be dedicated translations of big [opensource] free software.
- but i am not a java programmer.
