As the title says, this is a list of Web browsers that still work in Windows 7 (in 2024) and whether they're updated anymore. For example, you can still use Internet Explorer on Windows 7... but should you?
We'll start with the built-in / Microsoft and "Standard" / main brand browsers:
- Internet Explorer v11 - Dated 2013 - No longer updated - Do NOT use!
- Microsoft Edge version 109.0 (Dated 2024) - Warning message: "Edge is no longer supported on this version of Windows, upgrade to Windows 10 or later..." (Version on Win10 machine is 128.0, Sep24) - out of date.
- Chrome browser, v109.0 - out of date, latest version is v128 (on Win10, Sep24) - therefore out of date (but works pretty well).
- Mozilla FireFox** (v115.0.3 last version for Win7/8/8.1) - you'll need the offline installer to install this otherwise it will try installing a newer version and say your OS isn't supported - ?out of date? / once installed, will update / auto-update using the "ESR" / "Extended Support Release" enhancements! Available from MajorGeeks (54MB)
- Opera Browser (aka Opera One - latest version is v112 on Win10) - select 32-bit offline download, download from majorgeeks.com/mg/get/opera,1.html - DOES NOT WORK :(
- Opera GX (gaming?) - skip this one if your PC is slow (not tested, v95 is apparently the last one)
If you can get the off-line installer for FireFox v115.0.3 this could be a great option for many people, as this should be familiar to lots of people, and will auto-update. **For MOST people, FireFox is going to be one of the best bets, after it's been updated (at time of writing, ESR updates to 115.15.0, September 2024).
Moving onto the browsers that are from other people:
- Supermium (v126 latest at time of writing) - 104MB (32bit) / 115 MB (64bit) - search github for the latest release for Windows. UP TO DATE (based on Chrome).
- Midori v0.5.11 - (from 2023) - installed then crashes (need to try newer version).
- K-Meleon / Portable - (35MB, v76.5.5 Sep 2024) - has adblock plug-in available, very light, gives a different view of the internet (some might call it old-school).
- Pale Moon - (30MB, v33 Sept 2024) - Up to date, and seems to work well.
All browsers tested on a Compaq Presario CQ56, with a "Celeron 900" (single core, 2.2ghz cpu), running Windows 7 (32-bit), with 4GB RAM (3.25GB usable), and a 320GB HDD.
Running one browser at a time, performance from most browsers (that worked) seemed acceptable, even when playing video from YouTube, however, it was when opening multiple browsers that slowdown was the biggest problem.
