Apple are a hardware company and their real enemy is Dell (not microsoft).

okay, lets make up some random crazy dude stuff / and some not so crazy stuff:

Apple's enemies are all other companies other than Apple (excluding their partners, Intel) - so that means that Microsoft/Dell/HP/Linux are competitors. Apple is interested in making money, pure and simple, IBM seem to be stopping them from making the most of the current market situation. The current market situation is made up of millions of people who want to use the Internet/Email, but are having major problems with Windows due to Windows/Internet Explorer stagnation - Microsoft have been taking a VERY long time with an extremely out of date browser, and an operating system that's probably got more patches than original code. So Apple want to make the most of this, and to do this they need suppliers who can supply them in bulk (and this is something Intel can do).

Apple could release ultra cheap Mini (Intel) Macs (or just leave them at the current price), sell more than Dell, and end up with 30% or more market share with all those people running Mac OS X because they just want to use the internet and email and are sick of buggy/dodgy windows / viruses / spyware / popups etc.

Those people who don't want to go Apple, can just use Firefox, and have to put up with dodgy Windows.

Google are officially God - all $77bn of it. cnetblogs tell the story.

I think CASIO may have just made the perfect digital camera.

The CASIO EXILIM EX-S500 - it's ultra compact, ultra cool, has 5 megapixels, 3x optical zoom lens, large 2.2" screen, built in anti-shake technology, and VGA MPEG4 video with sound, letting you record up to an hour on a 1gb SD card. If it's anything like the S100 I've currently got then, it'll be fantastic! (the S100 is ultra small 3mp, very fast very easy to use, lots of controls and features, but a limited video mode (320x240 /15fps))

just for some background - Apple have never ever used intel/x86 processors before, they have always used Motorola / PowerPC / IBM PowerPC chips. It makes you wonder what will happen next? Will you be able to install OSX on normal PCs? Will Macs become much cheaper? What CPUs will they use/will the be 64bit? And why didn't they go for 64bit AMD cpus?

G5 performance vs P4 performance (G5s twice as quick as P4) - perhaps P4s will simply replace the G4s and Laptop CPUs to start with? and then later use Quad core P4s when they get released? apparently they've been talking to AMD as well, although if Apple's deal with Intel is anything like Dell's deal with Intel, then that may never happen...

IE7 not for Windows 2000. "What kind of silliness is this?" Microsoft claim that IE7 will rely on too much stuff that's in Windows XP, meaning they couldn't possibly make it for W2K. I thought this was the kind of stuff Microsoft weren't allowed to do? You know, Microsoft, if you remember all those law suits? Do you remember them? you're not meant to tie software into an operating system. story here. I don't care too much, I guess we'll just have to roll out Firefox onto 3000 Windows 2000 PCs, when IE6 becomes completely obsolete. (It's pretty much obsolete as it is anyway).

(Yeah I know it's best to do a fresh install but that would've taken ages, and upgrades should work, otherwise they shouldn't offer the feature.)

And a general appeal: does anyone know where I can buy one of these? (I know you can buy them in Singapore airport, but as I'm unlikely to be passing by Singapore airport anytime soon, I doubt I'll be able to get one).

Okay, I'm on my 3rd PC in as many days that I've fixed using Firefox - this is due to Internet Explorer being broken and completely unfixable no matter how many times you try and reinstall it. (ooh look, you can get an Internet Explorer theme for Firefox so that people think they're still using Internet Explorer. Plus it seems to speed things up. link.)

Hey check it out, a big Atari logo on the top of the E3 expo - who'da'thunk it? Microsoft, in an attempt to replace every software company in existance, have released a "Malicious Software Removal Tool". It's designed to get rid of some of the most common viruses such as sdbot etc. The only problem is that it doesn't actually work! Twice I ran it on a machine that had SDBot, yet it told me there was nothing wrong with the pc. Luckily Mcafee have a free tool that actually works, called stinger, get it here.

Free Anti-Virus Software

Free anti-virus software... what do you use, is it anygood? (I'm particularly interested in free software rather than stuff you have to pay for)

Avast is free. V4.6 Seems to use about 10mb when running on XP (with 96mb ram) - seems to do the job. 8.8mb download. Has an annoying spinning A next to the clock in the taskbar when it's doing stuff that you can't seem to switch off. Can be set to scan for viruses as a screensaver.

AVG Free (now available from http://free.grisoft.com). V7.0 seems to use about 21mb when running on W2K (with 384mb ram). "The complex anti-virus protection for your computer." is their tagline! It doesn't sound very appealing! 10mb download.

Anti-Vir also works with Linux. (6.2mb download). Also includes protection from 'internet diallers'. One of the programs is called 'Luke Filewalker' which is pretty cool. Seems to use about 12mb when running on W2K (with 96mb ram).

I couldn't find any other anti virus software that was fully featured. (some would protect your system but wouldn't remove viruses if you did get infected, and others were just web based scanners).

A fire station in Lancashire was set alight by arsonists while firefighters were out on a call.

Crews from the Burnley station were attending a house and a car fire at about midnight on Sunday.

The firefighters returned to find flames coming from the foyer of the Belvedere Road base.

It is believed that flammable liquid was sprayed into an emergency phone at the station and then set alight. Police are investigating.

"Plans to produce the Rover 25 and 75 models in China would not indicate that such a deal is in the offing as SAIC already owns the intellectual property rights for these models following a deal with MG Rover last year." Rover seems proper shagged - they already sold the Mini and Land Rover years ago (although Land Rover isn't making profit for Ford), and now they've sold the 25 and 75 (well a year ago) to SAIC, the 75 being one of the better current cars, the 45 was based on the Honda Accord from like 1996 or earlier, and the City Rover, which is really just a Tata something from India. So what's that leave them with? the MGF, the expensive MGX (which is about £70k when it should be around £30k like the Audi TT, Porsche Boxter etc) and some concept ideas (such as a new MGF, a 75 coupe, and a new Rover 45, which actually looked quite good).

I've setup an "msn blog" to see if they'll let me host images and post them in other places. you can visit the blog, monkeychai, and check out my post about this picture. (it was taken by a fuji, proving ben's opinion about fuji cameras). The msn blog seems customisable, but not in the same way that you can truly customise blogger's blogs - i like the way they integrate image hosting much better than blogger do though. (Although msn seem to compress the images to buggery)

CherryOS may be something to keep googling for in May. Aparently PearPC (a free + open source PowerPC emulator, which happens to run Mac OS X) didn't like the fact that CherryOS was basically modifying open source software but not re-releasing the changes - it costed something like 30 quid.
The next edition of macos X (10.4) is coming out around the end of april (priced at around 90 quid, for the whole OS), for a free demo, just visit your local 'apple store'(tm) (oh you probably don't have one.) Anyway, expect a whole heap of erm.. 'marketing' about widgets. In theory they're meant to be pretty easy to program. (ie; like javascript is easy to program)

Aparently Dell don't do AMD (based systems). Which sounds silly.
Intel have shipped/'released'/announced dual core processors, and Dell promise to sell systems with them for only £1600, which seems quite cheap really.
I think we're waking up to the idea that we can't go much faster with Ghz at the moment, but we can go parallel / more efficient / do more with each clock.
Just to be unfair and AMD 64 biased, (and this might be an elaborate hoax but..) there's this guy with an 'venice' core 90nm AMD which will overclock from 2.0 ghz to 2.8ghz, which means AMD have got some good people working on making processors go fast (and not too hot), maybe VIA should get their help.

Be Cool (2005) is a bit average, the trailer seemed like it had so much potential. it's more comedy than gritty gang crime.

however The Long Good Friday (1980) is very good - it's got a young chubbier Peice Brosnan, and Charlie from Casualty in it playing serious gangsters - overall much better than I had expected and well worth watching, got some good and shocking twists in it (although it's not family viewing). (Plus it's got some guy who ended up in Brookside in it)

things that should exist but dont

things that should exist but dont:

- monkey digital camera - digital camera shaped like a monkey's face
- monkey tron - the tron film, but acted with monkeys
- polaroid digital camera - digital camera merged with a classic polaroid camera that prints the small polaroid prints instantly (could be mainly classic polaroid, with built in scanner that automatically scans the photo for authenticity) (eg like this)
- instant coffee cup - about the size or a bit larger than a thermal mug / flask, basically you put real espresso ground coffee in the bottom, and milk/water in a different compartment, then in the morning you wake up, press the button on the side and it then makes it for you (eg, you could set this up before you go to bed, then in the morning you press the button and it's ready) it would have to have a lid and then you could take it with you
- life size fabreeze / clothes freshener - basically this is so you can sleep in your clothes, you then get out of bed, walk through the large clothes freshener and it blows air over your clothes mixed with fabreeze and then you're ready to go to work as soon as you get out of bed (this would work well with the instant coffee maker)
- auto setup and use of old pcs for additional computing power - ie. you buy a new computer set it up on your desk, put your old computer in a cupboard, connect it to the new computer (long usb cable / network cable), and then Windows whatever auto detects it and farms out processing to the old computer as well as the new computer (eg for mp3 encoding / etc) this would mean you'd have a use for all the old computers companies chuck away each year (like all the p3-500mhz machines)

- obvious ones are: time travel, teleportors (get you to work instantly), the whole of britain working from home (all it should take is clever pc network access (VPN broadband access) and phone forwarding), rubber cars (if all cars were covered in bouncy rubber, then insurance should be REALLY cheap).
